{"id":790,"date":"2012-01-11T22:10:02","date_gmt":"2012-01-11T16:40:02","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/hcurocks.wordpress.com\/?p=790"},"modified":"2012-01-11T22:10:02","modified_gmt":"2012-01-11T16:40:02","slug":"big-sur","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ramramaswamy.org\/blog\/2012\/01\/11\/big-sur\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Sur"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align:justify;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hcurocks.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/mriganka.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-792\" title=\"mriganka\" src=\"http:\/\/hcurocks.files.wordpress.com\/2012\/01\/mriganka.jpg?w=116\" alt=\"\" width=\"116\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>Last week, <strong>Mriganka Sur<\/strong>, the \u00a0Paul E Newton Professor of Neuroscience\u00a0and the Head, Dept of Brain and Cognitive Science at MIT (The Massachusetts Institute of Technology) in Cambridge, Mass. was in Hyderabad, and we were fortunate to have him deliver one of our\u00a0<strong>Distinguished Lectures, <\/strong>on<strong>\u00a0\u201cBrains, Minds and Machines\u201d.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">The talk was, in a word, electrifying. The Raman auditorium was overflowing (we really have to get larger auditoriums, and ones that are more well equipped audio-wise&#8230;) and many students were sitting in the aisles, many more were standing. But it was well worth it, \u00a0the talk itself was the star.\u00a0It was delivered superbly. It was passionate. It was articulate. It had content that was easy enough for the non-specialist to appreciate, and there was enough \u00a0detail and material in it to make it quite clear even to specialists that one was listening to a master of the game.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">Mriganka Sur FRS is amongst the most celebrated neuroscientists of the world today. He did his\u00a0B.Tech. from IIT Kanpur, and subsequently moved to\u00a0Vanderbilt\u00a0University where he got his Ph D. In addition to being Head of the Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences, at MIT he is also\u00a0Director of the Simons Initiative on Autism and Brain.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:justify;\">To have him visit the University- and so early in the year- was a special treat.
