\nDr Nataraja Ramakrishna was one of the\u00a0founding members of our \u00a0University’s Sarojini Naidu School of Arts\u00a0and Communication. As the first appointed Professor of the Dance Department of the School,\u00a0he methodically structured the entire dance curriculum and developed a pedagogic practice for\u00a0teaching dance at the post-graduate level. Through the introduction of the doctoral programme\u00a0in dance in 1991, he helped systematize the study of dance and brought in new research\u00a0perspectives. As many as 9 PhDs were completed under his supervision. His association with\u00a0the Department continued into his final years.
\nThere was cause to celebrate his career once again last Friday.\u00a0Padmasree Bharatakalaprapoorna Dr. Nataraj Ramakrishna<\/strong> was posthumously conferred the prestigious Sangeet Natak Akademi Fellowship<\/strong> (referred to as the\u00a0Akademi Ratna Sadasyata<\/strong>), along with noted vocalist Girija Devi, dhrupad maestro Rahimuddin\u00a0Dagar, and mridangam exponent T. K. Murthy.

\nGuru Nataraj Ramakrishna was an eminent dancer, guru, scholar, and musicologist propagating\u00a0classical dance in Andhra Pradesh for the last 50 years.\u00a0He was the architect of Andhra Natyam, a dance form he recreated and made popular. He also\u00a0reconstructed the \u201cPerini Sivatandavam\u201d, the militant male dance tradition of the tenth\u00a0Century AD (Kakatiya Period). He revived \u201cNavajanardanam\u201d a great prabanda dance tradition\u00a0that was being performed in Kunti Madhava Temple at Pitapuram in East Godavari District of\u00a0Andhra Pradesh for the last 400 years.
\nHe choreographed and staged \u201cSri Venkateswara Kalyanam\u201d, \u201cKumara Sambhavam\u201d, \u201cMegha Sandesam\u201d and won the Swarna Kalasam at Ujjain for the production of\u00a0\u201cKumara Sambhavam\u201d. He wrote over 40 books on Dance, six of which won him awards from\u00a0the Government of India. His outstanding books are \u201cDakshinathyula Natyakala Charitra\u201d and\u00a0\u201cAndhras and the Art of Dance,\u201d a treatise covering a period of 2000 years.
\nThe University of Hyderabad, in recognition of his seminal contribution to dance, conferred an\u00a0honorary doctorate on him and has instituted the annual Nataraj Ramakrishna Lecture on Art\u00a0and Culture in the year 2009. Recently, the University became the privileged custodian of many\u00a0of his worldly possessions, including his Padma award and other honours.
