\"image002\"<\/a>The National\u00a0<\/strong>Academy of Sciences, India<\/strong> (NASI) in Allahabad is\u00a0the oldest of the three scientific academies in India.\u00a0Founded in the year 1930, with the objectives to\u00a0<\/em>provide a national forum for the publication of research work\u00a0<\/em>carried out by Indian scientists and to provide opportunities for\u00a0<\/em>exchange of views among them, the NASI Memorandum of\u00a0<\/em>Association was signed by seven distinguished scientists:\u00a0<\/em>Meghnad Saha, K. N. Bahl, D. R. Bhattacharya,\u00a0<\/em>P. C. MacMohan, A. C. Banerji, Ch. Wali\u00a0<\/em>Mohammad and N. R. Dhar. <\/em>Several colleagues\u00a0at the University are currently Fellows of NASI.<\/p>\n

In recent collaboration with\u00a0Elsevier, publishers of numerous scientific journals and books,\u00a0NASI<\/strong> have introduced the NASI-Scopus\u00a0Award for young scientists. From the Elsevier site, I gathered that\u00a0the Elsevier Scopus Awards, started in 2005, recognize\u00a0<\/em>and reward the talent, knowledge and expertise of young scientists\u00a0<\/em>around the globe in a variety of disciplines. Currently, 15\u00a0<\/em>countries have participated in the award, each marked with an event\u00a0<\/em>co-organized by Elsevier with prestigious national consortia,\u00a0<\/em>funding body or society. Traditionally, these academic groups\u00a0<\/em>nominate an award committee to recognize scholarly output,\u00a0<\/em>citations, and prestige of their region’s outstanding researchers\u00a0<\/em>across a range of subject areas. Publication and citation\u00a0<\/em>information provided by Scopus helps the committee to assess\u00a0<\/em>country-wide research strengths and rising\u00a0<\/em>talent.<\/em><\/p>\n

\"venu\"<\/a>Winners are selected after\u00a0a fairly rigorous process, so it is particularly gratifying that\u00a0one of our own has been named the NASI-SCOPUS awardee in Physics\u00a0for 2013, one of 8 this year: Dr S Venugopal\u00a0<\/strong>Rao<\/strong> of the\u00a0ACRHEM.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Venu came to ACRHEM in 2007 from\u00a0IIT-Guwahati, where he had joined the faculty of the Physics\u00a0department after a postdoc in Scotland. His doctoral work was at\u00a0the UoH, on Incoherent Laser Spectroscopy for the\u00a0measurement of ultra-fast relaxation times and third order\u00a0nonlinearities in a variety of organic molecules.<\/p>\n

The philosophy of the\u00a0<\/em>Scopus Awards program is to celebrate science, <\/em>and this\u00a0has been emphasised over the years that the awards have been\u00a0given.<\/p>\n
