This year, our colleague Dr S Maqbool Ahmed is part of the<strong> CHACE<\/strong> team that has been shortlisted for the prize.<br \/>\nThe award commemorates the spirit and memory of IIT Kharagpur alumna Dr. Nina Saxena\u00a0 who passed away tragically in 2005. Conferred every year at the IIT Foundation Day, this award is made possible by contributions from IIT Kharagpur Alumni to remember Dr. Saxena\u2019s desire and drive for technical excellence, during her short but illustrious life. (For details, see the site<a href=\"http:\/\/www.iitfoundation.org\/?p=77\"> http:\/\/www.iitfoundation.org\/?p=77<\/a>)<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/hcurocks.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/chandrayaan2-htm-580x412.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-55\" title=\"chandrayaan2.htm-580x412\" src=\"http:\/\/hcurocks.files.wordpress.com\/2011\/07\/chandrayaan2-htm-580x412.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"580\" height=\"412\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nDr Ahmed was the\u00a0 the team leader\u00a0 of that payload on the Moon Impact Probe Mission of Chandrayaan project. Quoting from <a href=\"http:\/\/rajeshkochhar.com\/2010\/04\/india%E2%80%99s-lunar-spacecraft-chandrayaan-i-in-a-wider-context\/\">Rajesh Kochchar&#8217;s blog<\/a>, &#8220;<em><em>The impact probe MIP which deposited Indian national flag on the Moon also carried a scientific payload, nick-named CHACE, comprising a mass spectrometer. During the 25 minutes of fall on to the lunar surface, CHACE obtained data confirming the presence of water vapour in\u00a0 the Moon\u2019s atmosphere on the sunlit side.&#8221; <\/em><\/em><br \/>\n<em><em><\/em><\/em>There is more to the story, and that can be read<a href=\"http:\/\/www.universetoday.com\/72427\/new-moon-mission-chandrayaan-2-payloads-selected\/\"> elsewhere<\/a>.
